Superintendent's Message

November 11, 2020

Dear Madison Families and Staff,

I hope this letter finds your family well, healthy, and in good spirits.  I want to take some time to update you on what has transpired with COVID-19 cases over the last few weeks.  Over a period of 30 days the cases in each age group in Oakland County have moved tremendously in a negative direction:

Age group 0-4        from 0 to 58
Age group 5-9        from 31 to 74
Age group 10-13    from 33 to 87
Age group 14-18    from 80 to 256

In addition, this last week Oakland County Health Department moved the county’s risk category from a level C, on October 28th, to a level E in a matter of two days. Below you will see every county in Michigan and their risk factor grading, along with the trajectory of where health officials predict we are headed.

Last night the Madison Board of Education approved the continuation of virtual/remote learning for all students.  This includes returning our special education classrooms and our Early Childhood Center to full remote learning for an additional 30 days.  We will reevaluate on December 7th, the date of the next Board of Education meeting.  The Board of Education also voted to suspend winter sports for the same period of time.  Please be flexible and understand that teachers, administrators, and all staff are doing the best that they can to support our students, but may be making last minute alterations to lessons based upon the change in format.

I want to be clear with our families and staff, there are many districts that have paused in- person instruction to monitor cases in the community and take appropriate precautions to get their schools back for face to face instruction.  This is not a Madison specific situation, but a county, state, and country wide pandemic we are all dealing with.  This means that we need everyone in the community to do their part by taking necessary precautions. Recent information from the health departments across Michigan affirms that community spread is limited in schools, but instead is taking place in the greater community.

We will continue to work with the health department to make decisions about the best course of action for individual buildings and the district. We may bring back face to face instruction sooner for some buildings, while others may take a longer period of time.

I understand that everyone has pandemic fatigue. Please know that every Madison employee is doing all they can to meet the challenges associated with educating in a global pandemic. I want to thank you in advance for helping us take steps to keep students, staff, and families as safe and healthy as we can, given this fluid situation. As we continue to meet with Oakland County Health Department, we will update you as the situation develops.
